Job Description:

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.KEY FUNCTIONSClinical patient care duties:Conduct independent in-patient rounds to make preliminary assessments of in-patients on THNMO Consult Service.Conduct in-patient rounds with physician.Assess new consults to the THNMO service.Perform in-patient consultations.Education and counseling of patients regarding chemotherapy side effects and other aspects of their cancer.Discharge planning; this will include scheduling appropriate out-patient follow-up with M.D. Anderson and/or community practitioners; writing discharge prescriptions; performing appropriate patient and family education/counseling; interaction with the discharge planning team as needed to arrange for home health care, etc.Assist physician in coordination of in-patient care, including facilitation of scheduling tests, consultations with other services, acting as liaison with research nurses and with the patient's primary clinic attending, and appropriate interaction with the discharge planning team.Independent management of medical problems while awaiting consultation with the attending physician, within the guidelines of the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners.Screening and triage of phone calls from New Patient Referral office.Screening and triage of phone calls from recently discharged patients/family members.Attend department meetings pertinent to patient care.Perform other patient care related activities and various administrative duties pertaining to patient care and/or in-patient and departmental operations as assigned by the attending physician, department Chairman, or MLP Manager.Maintain records:Dictate admission history/physical, primary medical evaluations, consultations, discharge summaries, and final summaries in compliance with Medicare documentation guidelines.Write daily progress notes in compliance with Medicare documentation guidelines.Maintain daily flow sheets of pertinent lab and radiologic tests.Assist physicians with patient-related paperwork (e.g., completing x-ray and scheduling requests, writing prescriptions and chemotherapy orders)File, sort, distribute, and copy all pertinent paperwork.Be able to handle material of a technical and/or confidential nature.Prepare reports and work out details of presentations.Dictate letters to referring physicians by keying medical records dictation number and codes on telephone keypad and by speaking into a hand held telephone receiver.Collect patient charts from Medical Records.Take the initiative in making decisions and taking action which will further the department's goals.Be able to assimilate pertinent information in order to compose written correspondence.Display the ability to organize and disseminate information in a clearly understood manner.Perform other patient care related activities and various administrative duties pertaining to patient care and/or in-patient and departmental operations as assigned by the attending physician, department Chairman, or MLP Manager.Perform a variety of research-related duties, as directed by physician:Assess patients for protocol eligibility, which includes teaching.Assist research nurses in identifying patients who may be eligible for clinical trials.Explain protocol treatment options and plans to patients.Perform other patient care related activities and various administrative duties pertaining to patient care and/or in-patient and departmental operations as assigned by the attending physician, department Chairman, or MLP Manager.Other duties as assigned.EDUCATIONRequired: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.EXPERIENCEPreferred:At least 1 year of experience in Advanced Practice Provider role.LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONRequired:Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.
